Picture Show: “Seven Generations and Beyond”
3/27/2008 at Fish Creek, Town Center.
Barbara Kinsey and her sisters Andrea and Nancy provided the Gibraltar Historical Association’s series of “Gibraltar Talks” with the core of this presentation through story telling and photographic presentation in 2006. In the interim, as a gift to her family and in the memory of Virginia Kinsey, her mother, Barbara has scanned, digitized and enhanced with “mood fitting” i-pod musical accompaniments, this well founded historical journey for these three historical pillar families and their contributions to the Gibraltar and Fish Creek. The program will not only offer this pleasing historical content but also allow audience members to ask questions related to the production of this piece and also to better understand how these techniques can be utilized by others to document history making happenings for our Town and village communities. Spread this invitation and join us, and remember to bring photos for scanning and archiving into the Gibraltar Historical Association’s collections.
Robert K. Clark Exhibit, Fish Creek
4/1/2008 5/1/2008 at Town of Gibraltar, Town Center Building
Donation letter from the Allen Clark family: “Robert Clark took these photographs of Fish Creek around the turn of the last century a few years after his father, George Clark, his mother, Elizabeth Clark, and his sister, Alice Clark arrived here on a Goodrich steamer in the summer of 1897. The Clark Family wishes to express our gratitude to the Gibraltar Historical Association for accepting the collection. We especially thank William Guenzel who printed many of these pictures and dry-mounted the prints on a poster board. Bill consulted with Archibald Douglas who identified many of the buildings shown in the bluff views of Fish Creek on the back of mounted prints. Unfortunately, Buddy did not date the photographs so that many of the dates are guesses based on the presence in the pictures of Dr. Welker’s Casino and this state of construction of the new Fish Creek dock. The Casino arrived in tact over the ice from Marinette during the winter of 1907. We hope that this collection will help persuade the citizens of Fish Creek and the Town of Gibraltar to adopt the Fish Creek Historical District. Many priceless buildings shown in these photographs are still standing. Without the District, all of them are threatened with being swept away.” Allen Clark, January 31, 2008

In keeping with our 150th Year efforts to work with local artists to creatively celebrate our appreciation for all past and potential efforts to live in harmony with nature Wendy Carpenter and Daryl Asbury have developed a unique exhibition paying homage to the enduring, natural beauty that Cedar trees have provided to our peninsula environment “Yesterday....Today...and will provide for many Tomorrows.” Wendy, a fiber artist, and Daryl, an oil painter, are creating a series of sculptures and paintings…depicting the character and charm found in the Door County majestic cedar tree. The art exhibit is an attempt to bring forth a stronger awareness for the arts and environment. Interfibers is collaborating with the town of Gibraltar’s theme for the 150th Sesquicentennial celebration, “Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow”. To promote tree planting and preservation, Interfibers will be selling live cedar trees during the “Cedars of Door County” art reception at Interfibers Design Gallery. The tree sale proceeds will be donated to the Fish Creek Parks in collaboration with the town of Gibraltar Sesquicentennial. Hopefully, we will see many cedar trees planted around the peninsula and taken home with visitors! For the “Cedars of Door County” art exhibit Wendy is designing a series of mix media coiled tree sculptures for the wall. The sculptures depict the unusual cedar growth and movement found in the intertwining spiraling root system. Wendy is also weaving a large cast paper inlay wall hanging… representing flora, water, earth and fire. Daryl is painting cedar tree compositions on hard board…utilizing his unique surface painting techniques that expose under lying layers, texture and colors. Daryl paints from memory…imbued with emotion, often moody but consistently rich and deep. Both Daryl and Wendy’s work comes from a connection to nature. “Talking Tombstones”
8/5/2008 at Peninsula Park Cemetery (s)
“Talking Tombstones” and “A House In Mourning”: Gibraltar Township continues to celebrate its Sesquicentennial Year with August events which focus on the people and the customs from the past. In cooperation with the Friends of Peninsula State Park and the Gibraltar Historical Association the 150th Year celebration will offer a day when costumed folks will be grave side to offer historical recollections of various community members who were interred in Blossomburg Cemetery. It will be a memorial to deceased history makers who have left us much to talk about. “Talking Tombstones” will take place on Tuesday, August 5th from 10:00 A.M. until Noon. The place will be Blossomburg Cemetery in Peninsula State Park. A free will offering of $2.00 would be appreciated. Blossomburg Cemetery, located in the middle of Peninsula State Park, has been there for more than 100 years. It is not sponsored by a religious body, but has been the cemetery for Gibraltar Township. The name was given by an old Scandinavian settler, Ole Klugeland, who in the 1850s settled on a farm facing Eagle Harbor. Because of strong northwest winds, he called it “Blaasenberg” or “Windy Mountain.” Fourteen graves predate 1890. The earliest grave marker dated 1881, Libbie G. Churches, wife of Samuel churches, representative for Gibraltar Township on the County Board. After visiting Blossomburg Cemetery, journey over to Historic Noble House located in beautiful Noble Square in the center of Fish Creek to experience “A House In Mourning.” For the months of August through October a Victorian Home Funeral Display will be taking place. This display will feature artifacts and explain the customs of Victorian Home Funerals. Historic Noble house is open from guided tours from Noon until 5:00 P.M., Tuesday through Sunday. Admission is $3.00 for adults and $1.00 for children twelve and under. It is listed in the National and Wisconsin Register of Historic Places. Throughout history people have surrounded death with custom and ritual. In the 19th Century death generally occurred in the home and the funeral was held there as well. A family responded to its loss by drawing the blinds, closing the shutters, and pulling the drapes. On the door they hung a badge of crepe, the universally recognized symbol of a house in mourning. Within the home mirrors were draped in crepe and clocks were stopped and everyone worn black mourning clothing. As soon as news of a death spread, friends and neighbors came to the home to bring food, pay condolence calls and attend the wake in the family parlor. “The Tales of Twin Lighthouses”
8/13/2008 at Gibraltar Fire Station, 3496 Hwy F, Fish Creek
As part of Gibraltar Township’s Sesquicentennial Year Celebration, the Gibraltar Historical Association presents, “Gibraltar Talks…The Tales of Twin Lighthouses.” This informative program will be presented on Wednesday evening, August 13th at 7:30 P.M. The location for this event will be the Gibraltar Fire Station meeting room, 3496 Hwy F, Fish Creek. Presenters for the evening will be Joel Blahnik summer caretaker of Chambers Island Lighthouse for over 30 years, and Bill Cecil curator of Eagle Bluff Lighthouse for many years. These knowledgeable gentlemen bring the past to the present with tales of Gibraltar Area’s Twin Lighthouses. Audience participation is always welcome. Increased maritime traffic in the 1860s on the waters of Green Bay and passing through the channel located between the Strawberry Islands and the mainland of Door County near Fish Creek caused concern. The Federal Lighthouse Board requested lighthouses be constructed on Chambers Island and on Eagle Bluff north of Fish Creek for navigational safety. Two beacons for navigational assistance were built. Eagle Bluff Lighthouse was constructed in 1868 and the Chambers Island Lighthouse was completed that same year. Estimated cost for each lighthouse was around $12,000 dollars. Eagle Bluff’s first keeper was Henry Stanly and Lewis S. Williams served as Chambers Island’s first keeper of that light. Door County has 10 lighthouses, more than any other county in the United States. Lighthouses are an important, even critical part of Door County’s colorful maritime history. “Gibraltar Talks Programs” are open to the public. All ages are welcome. Bring along your memories, stories, and any old photo related to Gibraltar’s lighthouses. The program is free and refreshments will be served. Free will donations are greatly appreciated. Starting September 5th, Andrea will utilize the exhibit as the basis for programs to be presented to the student body in the Fall semester as a means of instilling an appreciation for the historical and artistic dememsions of these works.
